Position Summary

The University of Denver seeks nominations and applications for the position of Associate Director, Community Philanthropy & Activation. This is a unique opportunity for a talented professional and leader to join a dynamic, growing and purposeful enterprise united around a compelling mission charted by Chancellor Rebecca Chopp and Vice Chancellor for Advancement Armin Afsahi.

The Associate Director, Community Philanthropy & Activation reports directly to the Director of Lead Marketing and Community Activation within the Creative Engagement team, a unit within the Global Networks function of University of Denver Advancement. As an integral member of the Creative Engagement team, they will oversee the continued development of integrated campus community philanthropy programs, specifically those focused on students, faculty and staff, parent and family giving, leveraging major and micro campaigns to inspire giving. Additionally, the Associate Director will play a key role in the establishment of a cohesive recent graduate activation program for undergraduate and graduate alumni of the University, working closely with Global Networks partners. The Associate Director will also work closely with their teammates on other key initiatives that could be leveraged to bolster philanthropic participation of the campus community and recent graduates, including but not limited to One Day for DU.

Essential Functions

Leadership and Budget Management: Serve as the go-to strategist for DU’s award-winning student philanthropy program, Faculty and Staff Campaign and recent graduate engagement strategy. Within these programs and initiatives, the Associate Director will effectively manage operating budgets, monitor transactions, and participate in budget modeling and forecasting processes while driving revenue generating programs. A commitment to staying within budget is essential in order to optimize ROI and demonstrate financial stewardship.

Management and Supervision: Supervise a direct report, providing project direction, feedback, mentoring, evaluation and other key functions, while also ensuring that responsibilities are delegated as appropriate to create sustainable workloads. Additionally, serve as a key leader within the Creative Engagement team, providing input on campaigns and projects at the strategic level and being a thoughtful voice for synergistic engagement and activation opportunities.

Student Philanthropy: Lead efforts to institutionalize campus-wide student philanthropy through the award-winning DU Student Foundation. Seek and capitalize on thoughtful, strategic opportunities to weave, with thoughtful precision and a compelling narrative, student philanthropy into the student experience at DU, while also leveraging major campaigns like One Day for DU and smaller micro campaigns to drive student participation in giving. The goal is a student philanthropy program that recognizes all student giving, including community service. Building on an already award-winning program, create annual strategies and goal setting to reach 3, 5 and 10 year benchmarks for student philanthropy.

Recent Graduate Activation: Create a trajectory of student philanthropy that will programmatically evolve into a recent graduate activation strategy, with a cohesive narrative encompassing the full range of channels and close coordination with key partners, including those delivering stewardship.

Faculty and Staff Campaign: Manage DU’s highly successful work to create meaningful opportunities for faculty and staff philanthropy. Operating from a strategic plan with short- and long-term goals for faculty and staff philanthropy, the Associate Director will ensure purposeful campaign communications (including digital communications), causes of philanthropic interest to faculty and staff, meaningful stewardship, and volunteer outreach and organizing to spur participation. Strategically leverage other campaigns, such as crowdfunding projects and days of giving, to inspire participation among faculty and staff and explore and implement opportunities to create connections between faculty and staff giving and student philanthropy at DU.

Campus Partnerships: Outside of activating students, and faculty and staff giving efforts, the Associate Director will leverage and continue to grow on-campus partnerships to develop new streams of revenue for funding community enhancing projects.

Team Support: Consistently seeking efficiencies and solution-oriented, this position will help foster creativity, integrated thinking, and always with an eye for ROI. This includes continually surfacing best practices, identifying emerging trends, and best in class case studies.

University Citizenship: Serve as an active and collaborative partner to all central and unit-based advancement functions and campus colleagues to foster strategic, effective, and collaborative fundraising practices, communication, structure, and processes. Contribute to team success and model “One DU” leadership.
