Let's Debate This Idea: Beck Will Release His New Album Only As Sheet Music

/ Comments (21)

So, the Internet is abuzz since yesterday about this idea Beck had to make people buy his new album of songs, not as MP3s, but as twenty songs existing only as individual pieces of sheet music. Hmm. Forbes' Will Burns calls it a "genius innovation." He thinks rabid fans are going to download the music, make their own versions on their own instruments and upload those tunes to Facebook and YouTube — creating a massive amount of Beck's work in every shade of amazing for all to devour. From there, the masses will flock to his concerts to see how he plays those songs himself. Won't that be something.

We think it's a load of pucky.

In this instant gratification age we live in, people are too impatient and lazy to be bothered with this gimmick. Furthermore, it's hearing the album that fuels concert ticket sales — not hearing the album as played by your next door neighbor's garage band. This has pretentious rock star written all over it and we predict, in one month's time after the album's release in December, that a set of MP3s will conveniently appear in the iTunes store awaiting the instantly-downloadable whim of any and every Beck junkie.

What's your take?

I think it's a great Idea, It'll keep all the pricks out the 1-up long enough to get my highscore

cynical much egotist?

It's a cool idea, but I don't want to hear everyone else's version of Beck songs. I want to hear his!

This would be better as a supplement to a recorded version, IMO.

the pot calls the kettle black? how many pieces of advertising has the egotist hailed as ground breaking and truly innovative because they engage the consumer and let the consumer play? all of those advertising pieces look an awful lot like this, except that the result of this will be beck-written music, not some bullshit-mt.dew-art.

Haters gonna hate.

I think it would be cool if the plan was to then take submissions from everyone who played and recorded their parts and then he used that to actually make the real record. With him performing on top of it.

it's beck. who cares.

In an interview in the late 60s Bob Dylan said "It's not the bombs that have to go, man, it's the museums." Highlighting the idea that great art (whether it's music, painting or other forms) is meant for the masses. I think Beck's achieving this with this (albeit) grandiose vision.

Whether it's too idealistic versus realistic is most definitely a legit question - but, I personally am sick of the record-every-song-of-every-show-from-the-front-row kind of fan and am looking forward to the innovations artists have regarding engaging listeners and concert goers alike.

Cheers Beck

Genius if you ask me. Too bad I cannot play music very well at all.

I think you're angry that he is a little better at marketing pop culture than you are.
Think about it, he has largely played "hipsters" like a fiddle for the past 20 years. He got noticed during the era of dressing like a hobo and being a "slacker" by busting his ass to make it look like he was not busting his ass and generally out hoboing everyone else. This guy came from a sold musical/artsy family that had some decent success and connections in those fields, but no one knew that at the time and if they did would he still be the same hero to the greasy hair thrift store crowd? All anyone could know in 94 is that he just magically appeared out of a dumpster one summer day with a guitar and drum machine somewhere in California.

Flash forward to today and it looks like some are being trolled once again by Beck. Good show Beck 8/10

I like it. Let's do an all kazoo version at Rocky Mountain Recorders.

This is a fantastic idea. I'm am sure that the songs will eventually be released in the form of a live or studio album.

I have a feeling we will all be devouring these songs as interpreted by heavy hitters like Jack White and Radiohead (Beck and Radiohead both stopped into Mr. White's studio recently, just saying)

Also, every aspiring indie act will be all over this.

oasis did something similar to this with buskers years back

beck is not relevant anymore so who cares anyways
not that big a gamble considering his primary audience is gen x'ers

I can't wait for someone to record this for skrillex to play

I think this is genius. In fact more genius than a site running on drupal that only has 1 breakpoint. Time to modernise TDE! The times are a changing and you're looking as old and out of touch as Douglas Bowman's designs for Blogger.

We're already getting some inquiries from local musicians looking to come in to Coupe to record some of this stuff. Should be an interesting exercise for the musicians if nothing else. Looking forward to hearing what comes of it!

Beck? Really who does now (or ever did) give a fuck? So he sells shit, boring, songs in sheet music? He… (pausing rant to re-read TDE's take).

Ok, nice work people, thanks, I was ready to go off on a tangent. Yes, this is dumb. Beck sucks now, as he did 15 years ago. If you like him, it (probably) means that you are a 30+ kook who never actually explored any other music than what the ole' MTV was showin' ya. I imagine that the people who like Beck have the Beatles and Bob Dylan right next in the playlist (and still eagerly talk about them!) Boring, boring, tired shite.

So what are you listening to these days DJM.

I really love Adele's album 21
It's right in my playlist next to Smash Mouth and Ringo Starr's All Star Band

I love this idea. It's brilliant. From a marketing and a musical perspective, it's truly a concept album.

What Radiohead did with the pay what you like release for In Rainbows set the bar pretty high, and this may have just topped it.

I think this is a commentary on the value of music. It's so easy to digitally steal an artist's music and not think twice. But if we get ripped off creatively or don't get paid for our work we flip the fuck out. So this say's, "Here you go, you do the work .You spend the time and effort recording it if you can actually play music. Oh, you can't play music? So I provide a service that is valuable to you. But you don't want to compensate me for it? Well rip this off, have it. Fuck you. Enjoy."

Anyone that has ever seen Beck live knows he is a true songwriter and performer. There is no doubting his legitimacy. We all prefer types of music and sound, and they change immensely from one day to the next. I believe Beck's idea is to promote creation and new art. The egotist writer made a rash prediction based on historical likelihood and probably being behind deadline. This brief article has "rush" written all over it.
