no more different than the age of renaissance when the church had access to the greatest painters/artist of its time.

So what is the new church now?

Taking offense to this is impossible. For everyone but @tae here.

you made your Mr. Brainwash, now lay in it.

So Banksy has finally admitted to his own self-absorption, as well as feeble-mindedness?

Oh cmon Banksy, be fair now, advertising attracts just as many self-obsessed people as anything else.

This quote comes from a long time back before he ever started doing the Mr. Brainwash thing. And I totally agree with the church comment.

i can't necessarily argue w/ 'slow and self-obsessive' as a fitting partial description, and i'm sure 'ambitious' fits advertisers, but 'creative'? They don't create a damn thing, they tune the hack-job pseudo-witty radar in their brains to look for the right visual or verbal hook for the the respective appropriate audience of the moment and then squeeze it through a planning or coordination process -- that might well be a special talent, but it's not 'creative' - modern and post-modern art and writing provides advertising w/ everything advertising 'creates' and contrives

Someone sounds bitter with the creative industry. Jobs are tough to come by, so I can't hate.

Dear tstolp. Clearly you think you know more about advertising than you actually do. Most advertising creatives are artists who decided that they'd like to eat. And yes a lot of creative does get whittled down to what the client and agency deems appropriate. But it's from those confines that breakthrough work often comes. In the freedom of the art world, there are few who manage to so something truly creative, even though they have absolutely no limitations.

...would be nice if "Selling Useless Shit" was not done by the most talented people in the world.

just sayin.
g.

if we can "sell uesless shit" while entertaining you, i dont think all is lost. Advertising is not always about "selling shit" sometimes it can be about selling an idea or a thought even a cause. And yes, Us advertising people are creative, you try to create something that would "appease" the critical masses. Oh wait, fine/modern art has the same opinionated audience... hmmmm

Greatest

Compliment

EVER

@tae - perhaps the question is more, what was the church then?
