Gatwick Airport Unveils 'Discovery Tour' Using Barcodes

/ Comments (3)

Gatwick Airport has unveiled a novel way of giving passengers a glimpse inside the progress of its £1 billion reconstruction project, through a barcode 'Gatwick Discovery Tour.' Becoming the only airport in the world to use standard barcodes as an audio-visual information tool, Gatwick worked with stickybits, whose free mobile application is used to scan the codes with smartphones to provide details about the airport's upgrade and progress. Any one have insight into why they'd choose to use a regular-old bar code here versus a QR Code?

Hi Kathryn,

Yes - we chose barcodes over QR codes because we thought they were more easily recognisable by consumers. They are what you see on everyday items after all.

Secondly, and this is more of a personal opinion, but I think aesthetically they work better.

Finally, we just liked the Stickybits solution - it worked for us, and for our client!

All the best, Dirk (Rabbit, London)

I agree with Kathryn, a QR code would have been a lot easier to implement and probably a great deal cheaper. I have no idea what Gatwick Airport is paying 'Sticky Bits' but you can bet it is a rip-off for the long-suffering British taxpayer.
