Boulder's Alex & Ana Bogusky Launch Initiative to Create a Million New American Jobs

Last night, Alex and Ana Bogusky launched the Million American Jobs Project — a YouTube video that mashes animation with Econ 101 to prime people on the power of the pocketbook, illustrating how buying a larger share of American-made goods can positively impact U.S. job numbers.

Sleeves rolled up, Alex narrates the three-and-a-half-minute video, which moves post-WWII-era utilitarian icons —cogs, workers, factories and consumer commodities like sneakers and big-screen TVs — along a conveyor belt to tell the story of how once-great America lost its competitive edge and fell into the Great Recession. Scott McDonald animated and art directed the “Million American Jobs” project.

Buy American, people (or better yet, buy Colorado). It ain't that hard to make change.


Question: Was SodaStream made in Amercia?

Common sense, don't need Alex to tell us this. This has been debated for over a generation, where was Alex when jobs started being exported to the far east under the guise of tax breaks while he was doing their advertising? Seems like a convenient ploy, especially since his hand picked guys screwed up the Making Colorado thing.

I thought the same thing, Anon. Why does Alex keeps trying to convince us that he has grown a conscience? He made a fortune selling for and against Burger King. He has a vested financial interest in "Buy American" as an investor/partner in Made Movement..

If we all bought only American made products, there wouldn't be a camera to shoot the video, a computer to edit with or a tv on which to watch the video.

Cause the problem, sell the solution.

Presenting a well-known argument with spiffy motion graphics makes its conclusion no less banal.

Anyway, why not instead of buy American we buy Colorado? Or why not keep going and only buy Boulder? Or why not just buy all my computer parts from the guy down the street? The implicit argument is that proximity is the best way to choose my purchases, and that argument goes some weird places.

What have you (all above) done lately that contributes to betterment of the United States of America? He's doing something positive you critic fncks. Put aside what his talent has made people buy in the past. Applaud him for putting his talent to better use. Again, I ask, what the fnck have you done? Me, I haven't done much either.

I think this is a great reminder to keep US-made top-of-mind as we go through our purchasing decisions. I was surprised to see credits at the end. Is this a cut for the creative crowd? Because if it isn't, who gives a sh*t? It undermines the credibility of the cause and its authors. A cause, that should not be linked nor limited to the people who helped to make a little film.


You get the message regardless of who it comes from. Buy American WHEN YOU CAN, just a little bit more. That's all.

While Tax Payer's response was a bit on the shill side ("Critic fricks?" Really?), he/she does make a valid point. Bogusky's message is indeed a worthy one. And yeah, none of us -- you, me, the rest of the people commenting on this thread, even the people behind the Egotist -- have done as much as we should on behalf of our country.

Having said that, it doesn't mean that we should cast a blind eye towards hypocrisy. And the fact is that Bogusky created a campaign for SodaStream, including a commercial that ran during the Super Bowl. As it turns out, SodaStream's headquarters are in Israel and their primary production plant is in the West Bank. Not exactly America's heartland, is it?

Bogusky's work on behalf of SodaStream wasn't "in the past," Tax Payer. It was within the last 12 months. Not exactly ancient history.

If Bogusky truly believes that we should buy products made in the USA, he cynically compromised his dearly held principles for big bucks. If he's really not gung ho about the whole "buy American" thing -- or thinks that the rules don't apply to him -- then his crusade is little more than a vanity project aimed at massaging his ego.

Either way, the whole thing reeks of hypocrisy. And it's not exactly the first time Bogusky's gotten away with it. After all, this is the guy whose agency rose to prominence on the basis of their stellar anti-smoking campaigns -- only to wind up adding to America's obesity epidemic with their advertising for Burger King and Dominoes. So: smoking is bad -- but stuffing your piehole with artery-clogging junk food is good.

Why this guy continues to get a free pass is beyond me. Shouldn't he be subject to the same standards of conduct as the rest of us? If a politician was this blatantly hypocritical, they'd be laughed out of office.

Oh, and also: The video itself isn't very good.

Still, despite all that, I hope it succeeds. I already buy American -- but not because Alex Bogusky told me to.

I think these comments are pretty indicative of the problem with this as a campaign. Bogusky is only known in the ad world and the ad world interprets this as hypocritical after knowing his background. Is the message good? Sure. We should also be nicer to each other, recycle more and try to cutdown on bad fats. I don't know why Alex likes to get on screen for this stuff and why Made keeps pushing him out there like he's a celeb anywhere besides Boulder.

All that shill talk to pump his Made branded products. If Alex extolls us to pay a little more for American made goods, couldn't he also have extolled buying products made with American Union Labor too?
