Automaton [Teaser] - Via Denver's We Drink it Black
The underground filmmakers at We Drink it Black released a trailer for their next major project: Automaton.
Far in the future automatons populate a city which covers the entire globe. Out of loneliness and a desire for human contact, Gary hacks his housekeeper to be "better" company at home. She is programmed with one objective: to make Gary happy. But when Gary's happiness begins revolving around Margaret, a woman on a quest to escape the city, what's an automaton to do?

Uh...
Im a fan of the sci-fii and the virtual, but something bout this does not cut it for me.
I take it black too.
Dove was cool as far as the rest of it...not so much.
Looking past the VO and overall audio mix, along with poor acting, or maybe poor direction you have some interesting things going on here. The slow mo dove is ill. Did you shoot that yourself? I was confused when you had that shot of the pigeon towards the end, although I think it represents a world outside. There's some nice shots. The opening is nicely composed with interesting practical lighting effects, Nice camera pan. The red socks cut is nice. The shot at 1:22 can be appreciated because of the composite work done here. Overall I think you need to push your Layout more. There's a lot of shots that are slightly off kilter. If your going to frame at an diagonal then rotate it 45 degrees. Some things are slightly off center. Push the subject far to the left, think of the golden rectangle. From the teaser I do not see any use of shallow depth of field. I think the grading can be pushed as well. You have interesting lighting situations going on, you can bring that to life with more contrast. Watching the BTS it looks like a lot of work went into this. Looking forward to the final. Checked out your vimeo page to become familiar with your current work and I enjoyed all of it, most notably String Theory. Overall grade needs work, some of it almost looks like raw footage. Experiment. Dont be afraid to push the grade. CNTL-Z
Very helpful -- thanks for the notes!
You guys impress me
when the compositing is that obvious on such a small screen kind of ruins any chance of buying into the sci-fi world youre trying to create
felt really long and aimless
no real sense of drama
I just thought it reaked of beginner bside acting and off-ideology. I don't really give a shit for your review...!
Good critic Matt? Kaw
this was so awesome, reminded me of JayJay Abrahamanians work at times
and at other times, Speilberger
There is absolutely nothing that pulls you in that makes it worth watching. Nothing!
Damn. Harsh criticisms here. Considering this is a Denver local shoestring budget experimental budget film, maybe give it a chance? People think if it's not millions of dollars, full Hollywood treatment then it's worthless.
The acting does look pretty weak.
