Greeting Card Fundraiser Launches to Thank Firefighters and Raise Money for Fire Departments

/ Comments (10)

To add to the mix of creative ways to help those affected by Colorado's wildfires, Boulder company Card Gnome has designed three Thank You Firefighters cards that you can customize with messaging and have mailed directly to firefighters on the front lines. All proceeds benefit the local fire departments.

Not to be too negative. But this just seems like a cheap ploy for some people to get portfolio pieces.

How sweet!

The firefighters and workers that do more than repayable work, that never get much appreciation, getting a momento in possibly the biggest state fire disaster to date?

I think a designer would be more rightly annoyed if they worked for free because they were priveledges to just get a portfolio opportunity. Now, that is the real illegal pay option, everyone needs fair pay standards.

To address the original comment: It looks like these were designed by Steve Lowtwait, who has been designing posters in this style for years now. I could be wrong, so please correct me if I am. But, I highly doubt this is a "cheap ploy for some people to get portfolio pieces." To me, this seems like a Colorado native trying to do a good thing for people who go unappreciated all too often.

Cards are so meaningful, are a lasting keepsake, and is a great idea and alternative for online connectivity to be utilized!

Putting artwork on cards is the most traditional sense of sharing and displaying artwork, more so than a FUN T-shirt. It just depends on the work and what medium it goes best with.

Some of it resonates better with different groups and situations; it doesn't necessarily make any of it better.

Ladies for instance, probably don't appreciate being called 'guys', and t-shirts and rubberbanded bracelets from concerts!

Those cards were designed by Steve Lowtwait. God knows he doesn't need new pieces for his "portfolio"!

Steve Lowtwait does it again. Very nice work.

Yep, these are by me. Thanks for all the kind comments everyone. In 2010, I was able to raise over $11k for the Fourmile Fire relief efforts, all donated to firefighters. It's such a good feeling to be able to give back to the town I love.

Now that I work at Card Gnome, it's a natural fit for us as a company to leverage my art and give back in a greater way, especially that so much fire has devastated our beloved state.

Hey guys, they are created by Steve Lowtwait. He is Card Gnome's genius creative director. He supported the Fourmile Fire fundraiser last year and led the charge internally to do something for the firefighters across the state this year.

So many of us feel helpless in times of crisis and lack a way to personally express our gratitude to the individuals who risk their lives for us. We hope that when the firefighters receive hundreds (thousands maybe) of cards from people all over the country, they'll feel the deep gratitude of those that they are protecting.

The first comment is so bloody over-the-top hipster cynical, it made me laugh and laugh and laugh!

Then I laughed again, thinking that Steve needs a "portfolio". Bloody awesome! Steve was an art director for cartoons when we worked together at Nickelodeon....ten years ago!

Whoever you are--seriously and without irony--thanks for the laugh! You are awesome.
