Our Thoughts Go Out to Leif Steiner
Bad stuff isn't supposed to happen to good people. But yesterday it did. Leif Steiner, creative director and owner of Boulder creative firm Moxie Sozo, lost his home in the fire that's raging in Boulder County on Monday. He had 5 minutes to throw a few things in his car and escape a 100-foot wall of fire before it took everything he owned, 37 years of memories.
If you know Leif, you probably know what he's done to curate poster exhibitions to raise money for victims of Katrina and the Haiti earthquake. We want to do the same for him, but we're struggling to figure out how. If you have any ideas about how we might all rally to help Leif get back on his feet and restore some stability in his life, please let us know.
UPDATE: Thomas Dooley, founder and creative director at TDA Advertising & Design in Boulder, lost his home too. Seriously sad. What can we do for these guys?

I believe Thomas Dooley also lost his home in the fire.
Seems like, from the twitter feeds, that a lot of creatives lived up the canyons.
Tragic, thoughts going out to all effected.
My heart goes out to Leif and Thomas, two of Colorado's brightest creative stars.
If I understand correctly, I'm assuming that they may have even lost their clothes. Insurance should help, but is there anyone out there with a client who'd want to donate anything?
Now is the time to come together Boulder/Denver ad community.
@kyle: affected
Really bad news. We'll help any way we can.
Sending all the best thoughts to all in Fourmile -
Immediate ways to help through the red cross and both Boulder and Longmont humane societies are helping out sheltering animals.

But, yes, I'm very behind a creative community collabo to help out as well!
Hang in there Leif.
Thoughts are with you Leif, this is awful. I hope you and your family are okay!
I think the poster projects are beautiful - could we do a series to encapsulate their memories? I know the DC ran an interview with Leif and others about lost photos, and items building a lifetime of memories (a special canoe) I know those things are irreplaceable - but could be nice to design a set of memory posters (or another medium?) to preserve those links to memories - and bring in some $ to help out as well? Any other thoughts?
at the very minimum, it would be nice to have another interview with Leif. The others that I've seen from him on here have been borderline philosophical.
This profession drives the economy, and it would be interesting to hear the perspectives of someone who just lost everything. When you only have 5(!) minutes to pack up your life, what becomes 'valuable' and not valuable? What do you buy first? Do you make different decisions? What is going through your mind on Day 2? I can't imagine having my entire life wiped out.
Anyone want to 2nd the motion?
@steve sorry, A little consumed here.
Truly sad. I send everyone who lost their properties in the fire my sincerest regards. I hope everyone is safe and no one got hurt.
It is truly sad that both of those guys lost things that are irreplaceable, I can't imagine what it is like to have to choose which items to grab in 5 minutes or less. But for the egotist to compare their material possession loss that was probably covered by a really good insurance plan to the what the poor of both Katrina and Haiti lost, thats pretty sad. I really don't think that these two smart and wealthy boulderites need our money. sympathy yes, tons of it.
We're not comparing it to anything. We're saying that these guys have reached out to people in their time of need. And now they need us to do the same.
Anon, No one is suggesting that we send money to Leif or Thomas. I think the Egotist is simply pointing out that Leif has championed relief efforts for people in Louisiana and Haiti. He has given thousands of hours of his time and his agency's time, raising money for those people.
It is our turn to help him in any way we can. Even something as simple as a letter would probably be appreciated.
Relief funds can be found @ adcd.com to help victims of the fire, including the furry variety.
My seminal thought is the painful loss of a lifetime's mementos could be mitigated by the creation of new ones.
Now, before anyone reacts to the implied suggestion that any memory can be replaced, I'm only suggesting that tragedy can be "softened" by what comes after. Dare I say, it can be the catalyst for positive change. A lot like a grandchildren help fill the voids left by departed grandparents.
I know that both these guys are people of substance. I think they would appreciate that the seeds of their misfortune might sprout something new and fruitful.
So, here's the brief: "Find hope in tragedy." Based on that, what can/should we do? I stand ready to help mobilize the Denver ad community where I can.
My thoughts are with Leif and all others who lost their homes in the fire. I'm more than willing to help out a guy who has always been there to support others in their time of need.
I'm grateful to Leif's generous contributions to ADCD and the victims of circumstance. It's fantastic when a leader turns his or her capabilities to help those in need. If there is anything I can do to help besides following Leif's example, let me know. My heart goes out to all those, including Thomas and the 6? firefighters who lost their homes. Keep your chin up.
Many thanks for the concern. We rent our home up Four Mile to some very nice folks and we're more worried for them and their belongings right now. Luckily, they were out of town at the time and weren't in any danger.
We're getting very mixed messages as to the status of our place. First we heard for sure that it was gone, then we heard it was there. There's many people in the same awful boat. Satellite images we're not clear enough to know for sure and there's no definitive word at this point. It's still burning in our Logan Mill neighborhood.
Many friends lost everything and we're very sad over the loss of some very beautiful places that hold a lot of memories for all of us. Thoughts go out to everyone involved and thanks so much to the incredible firefighters and all the generous folks in Boulder making it easier for those affected... T
We can help with any production work or lend a desk to anyone out in the dark trying to keep their business afloat during these times. (although in denver)

I'm in NYC and I'm pretty sure the smoke has made it's way over here...
