Boulder Digital Works Launches Zombies vs. Hippies

Boulder Digital Works, with the support of digital creative agency Exopolis, is launching Zombies vs. Hippies – an innovative new scavenger hunt designed to get CU students to engage with Microsoft Tag technology on their smart phones. The initiative blends campus culture with a physical and virtual game, serving as an interactive way for students to socialize with friends, meet like-minded peers and navigate the CU campus.

Designed for CU, posters with images of dread-headed hippies and bloody zombies – featuring captivating slogans such as “Eat Hippie: Quench your Thirst” and “Legalize Granola: Rescue Boulder, Hippies!” – will be placed throughout the Boulder campus and at select off-campus restaurant and retail locations. The posters will push students to visit www.zombiesvshippies.com on their phones, where they'll learn the rules of the game, download the Microsoft Tag Reader, register and start playing. '

Participating students are assigned to teams and directed to complete missions, visit merchants and go to battle with other players, by scanning tags found on Zombies vs. Hippies posters. Students can recruit friends through email and Facebook, where they can also join the Zombies vs. Hippies Facebook fan page. Points are awarded for every mission completed, merchant visited and battle won, for the chance to win prizes.

The campaign is meant to explore the potential of mobile technology to create interactive and entertaining experiences. The outcomes of Zombies vs. Hippies will shed light on the ways college-aged kids use their mobile devices beyond traditional information and communication tools, as well as the implications for advertising, marketing and social media. The students will also experiment with iterations of the game in real-time as they learn about the participants.
