In The Egotist Inbox: Brian Suter

There are a lot of tough things about this business. But one of the toughest by far goes something like this. As a pop-eyed student, you’re taught by your design alma mater that you’re destined for greatness in the field. That hope is furthered when a great firm, Boulder’s Moxie Sozo in this case, accepts you for an internship. Brimming with confidence and a nice, rounded book, reality hits when it doesn’t take you as far as you once thought it would. (You’ve heard this story before, have you?) And you end up, also in this case, working at a small firm in Golden wondering how to step upward and outward once again.

Sadly, that’s where the story often ends for those whose fire has been completely doused. Gladly, it’s not the case for Brian Suter. We find his story inspiring because he’s worked long and hard afterhours, over lunch and through weekends to keep his book succinct, despite his days toiling away under the man doing work that’s not hitting the bar he’s set for himself.

Most curiously, we point to this quote from an email he sent us some time ago. “At Penn State I was trained by AGI professors, and the idea of ‘less is more’ is the mantra I design around. I don’t really enjoy using flourishes, and embellishment in my opinion is only ‘cool’ when it complements the concept and the intended audience.”

Sound like someone you’d like to hire? Us too. Keep your head up, Brian, and keep up the late nights. Your time will come.

Smart guy, and a great artist. Designed a very unique poster for a Meniskus concert a couple weeks ago that was a big hit with fans. I almost hope he continues to be underemployed so I can keep mooching free work from him! Really, though – a very thoughtful, creative and effective artist.

very nice work, but please increase the font size of the descriptions. I have 20-15 vision, last I checked, and I had to hold my laptop 3” from my face to read it.

Hire Brian.

Brian has a great portfolio, but more importantly – he has an amazing education and a relentless passion for good design. Brian graduated from Penn State’s design program, which is one of the best in the country. The program starts with hundreds of students and graduates only 10 – 15 of them per year. Unlike portfolio schools, Penn State doesn’t need your money and doesn’t care if you switch majors. To graduate, you must pull 2-3 all-nighters a week for 2-3 years. It is brutal, relentless and unforgiving. Very simply – if you are not world class, you are OUT. Brian graduated from this program. Afterwards, Brian interned at Moxie Sozo, which isn’t much different than Penn State. Once again, his hours were brutal, relentless and unforgiving.

I can say that Brian is an amazing designer with an amazing passion for the sport. More importantly, he is a great person, has a great sense of humor, works well with others and would do an excellent job in ANY design position that Colorado has to offer.

There are some great opportunities out there right now. Brian is one of them. When the economy rebounds, this man will already be taken.

Thanks everyone for the feedback! I truly appreciate the comments and acknowledgment. I know my book has holes – but everyday I try my best, and am constantly working to fill those holes with fresh, relevant work. My goal is to hopefully join a fun and passionate creative team that challenges my design abilities and allows room to further not only myself, but the company & team as a whole.

I’m glad to be a part of the Colorado creative community, and hope I can continue living and working here as a designer. I look forward to meeting everyone!

Eric: I look forward to our next collaboration!

SquareAss: I hope to have a CSS/HTML site up and running in the future. I’m still teaching myself the principles of coding and web-based design, only a few more books to go!

Leif: “Thanks” doesn’t justify how appreciative I am of everything you’ve done for me and my career.

I was fortunate to be able to work with Brian for an AIGA design project, Bordo Bello, which was an incredible experience. Brian has an uncanny ability to quickly analyze a project, and shoot off creative solutions like a machine gun. He backs this up with solid technical skills, a playful and pliable imagination, and sharp intelligence. Brian also has a fantastic sense of humor and will make you laugh. Brian is a major asset to any team, and I am sure he will continue to shine wherever he goes.
