Description:The 21 years I spent writing for newspapers gave me all the skills to meet any organization’s communications needs. Newspaper reporting taught me how to find the most important facts and put them on paper in a compelling form that explains complex information in clear language. Being a reporter made me a quick study, able to understand new concepts and situations on the spot. I’ve written thousands of stories and interviewed tens of thousands of people. Along the way, I earned prizes for best news writing in both Arizona and California and fit in a stint as a nationally syndicated columnist. Making all those stories happen meant finding records and information, interviewing sources, working with the photographers to schedule and arrange the best photos, consulting with graphic artists and working with editors from concept to finished story, even helping write the headlines. All of that meant a constant focus on teamwork and I am eager to fit those collaborative skills to new challenges . Being a reporter taught me how to think on my feet and get the job done on deadline. I’m eager to fit those skills into new and exciting careers. Here are some comments from colleagues: Scott Henry, online editor, Marin Independent Journal "Rick crackles with creativity and is a joy to work with. I don't know which is better - his ideas or his writing. They are both excellent. Bonus: he's funny, and knows when to use his sense of humor." Brent Ainsworth, editor/staff writer at the Marin Independent Journal: "I miss the days when Rick and I worked together at the Marin Independent Journal. I gave him complete freedom to work on feature stories about the characters in our community and it paid off with amazing award-winning results. Rick's talent with words, especially his wit, will always be one of the fondest memories of my journalism career. Rick always nailed his deadlines with copy that required a minimum edit. He did a great job lining up photos and juggling a busy schedule. In short, he's a real pro, a blast to work with and I highly recommend him." Shawn Connally, editor Make Magazine: "Rick is one of the finest journalists I've ever had the pleasure of working with. He's a great writer -- fast, thorough, clever, and dependable. Rick is extremely creative and is just as comfortable handling humorous assignments as serious ones. Some of his past stories are still on my all-time favorites list, and I can't wait to read his next work!"
