The History Colorado Center is seeking a graphic designer to work with an internal exhibit development team and a community advisory committee to develop an exhibit about the Chicano Movement in Colorado, focusing on the 1960s and 1970s. The exhibit will be approximately 1,200 square feet and open on February 7, 2015.
The Bilingual Graphic Communicator will help define the aesthetic approach for the exhibit and design and facilitate the production of all graphic elements.
Tasks include:
• Attending team and community meetings
• Helping to define the look and feel of the exhibit, including color schemes, materials, typography
• Contributing to developing a label hierarchy that will include labels in English and Spanish
• Creating graphic templates and logos
• Helping to ensure appropriate use of Spanish in graphics and labels
• Designing all graphic elements including:
o Title graphics
o Text panels
o Case labels including artifact labels
o Environmental graphics
o Interactive instruction labels, flipbooks, handouts, and prototype graphics
o Media (AV) titling and captioning
o Digital recreation of original materials for reproduction
o Marketing and development materials for collateral and advertising
• Readying all graphics for production and assisting in printing and mounting as needed
In addition to the Chicano Movement exhibit tasks, the graphic designer will design a 1968 month-by-month timeline to match the graphic style of the 1968 traveling exhibit and be involved in laying out signage and marketing materials for the 1968 traveling exhibit.
Qualifications:
• Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite 6
• Bilingual English/Spanish
• Solid graphic design background including creation of complex design packages
• Interest in the medium of museum exhibits as informal learning environments
• Ability to create an aesthetic approach consistent with Chicano Movement subject matter
• Self motivated with good time management and organizational skills
• Strong motivation to learn
• Workspace that includes computer and CS6
The bulk of the work will take place May–December 2014 and require deliverables at phases: concept design, schematic, design development, final design, and design phases; production may continue into January 2015. A more concrete timeline will be developed with the designer as details of the project are shared.
The stipend for this scope of work is $8,000.
