An Assignment For You: Recommending Colorado Photographers

/ Comments (62)

Since moving over to our new site design about six months ago – which allowed people to start signing up as members – we've been pretty lax about selecting people for our recommended list. We never intended this site to become a Yellow Pages for every Tom, Dick and Harriet pounding out creative stuff day-after-day. While it's nice to have a massive archive of our creative community in one place, we still think there's value in having a filter over the top of the listings that says, "This is someone who has been tested, proven and will absolutely deliver their intended services for you. Hire them now."

With that said, we're going to start combing through the membership base (well over 1,000 people at this point), section-by-section, and getting it in a more useful working order. We'd like your help. We're starting with photographers.

Click over to that section and take a look at who's listed. Who should be recommended from the list? This isn't about who you're friends with. It's an honest assessment of who the absolute best photographers are in Colorado. It's about quality, not quantity. (We'd also consider it semi-wanky for you to recommend yourself.) Now, put the names of people who should be recommended below.

Secondly, who's not on the list that should be? If you know them, contact them and tell them to spend 5 minutes signing up. If you don't, drop their name down there and we'll prod them to get signed up.

We'll pick a second category to dissect once this has run its course. Thanks for your help, CO.

Bryce Boyer. No hesitation. The dude has got skills and is tenacious when it comes to making the shot everything it can and should be, also, he's a helluva guy to boot.

Joe Swift. Great guy, lighting magician.

Samuel Trojanovich (www.trojanphoto.com)

How do you guys keep this "A" list updated after this vote? Do you guys review all new accounts made?

Jessica Grenier. I double-dog dare you to look at her portfolio. No, wait. Make that three dogs. http://www.jessicagrenier.com/

Bryce Boyer and Don Cudney. Both are super talented and great to work with.

Jessica Grenier is always a pleasure to work with, very professional and easy-going. Her technique is beautiful and unique (www.jessicagrenier.com)

Matt Slaby:

He's been in New Orleans for a few weeks, taken photos of the spill. He's incredible.

Actually anyone in his self-run photographer coop:

You already highlighted the emerging Stone Crandall. Also check out Keith Ladzinski (http://ladzinski.com), Ashley Davis (http://www.ashleydavisphotography.com/) and Allen Krughoff (http://hardcastlephotography.com/)

Another vote for Bryce Boyer. Creative, talented, professional and a genuine pleasure to work with.

Rack up another vote for Jessica Grenier. I've worked with her on countless occasions because of her creativity and professionalism.

David Mejias. He's a true artist and passionate about pushing concepts further. Very collaborative and talented. http://davidmejias.com/

Some local favs:

Matt Slaby, Jamie Kripke, Celin Serbo, Jason Innes, Jessyel Ty Gonzalez, Sergio Ballivan, Bryce Boyer, Don Cudney, Rick Souders, Tyler Stableford, Joe Hancock, and the crew over at Rich Clarkson and Associates.

There are more too, but I'm drawing a blank.

:D

Just wrapped up a shoot with Bryce Boyer, ... clients happy and we haven't got to retouching. Plus he nailed it with the Veronica Project

Bryce Boyer

He is about creativity, quality and experience. He gets the job done beautifully.

I admire the Colorado photographers mentioned above. I'll add my votes for David Pahl, David Raccuglia, and Brian Bailey.

David Raccuglia.

Bryce Boyer.

Juan Juanston.

Stephen Ramsey.

Chris Perez.

+ 1 bryce boyer.

Another recommendation for Bryce Boyer:
I'm fairly new to 5280 and there are two main reasons Bryce has worked for the magazine over the years and during the tenure of 3 different art directors. He consistently delivers the goods and he consistently raises the bar.

David Raccuglia
Joe Hancock
Bryce Boyer
John Johnston
Laurie Smith (amazing food photographer)
Jon Rose (new to editorial but FANTASTIC)
Julie Levy

Bryce Boyer: Totally for sure as Matt Chiabotti said. He's the real deal and he is also one of the most genuinely nice people you will ever work with in Denver hands down.

Richard Feldman: He's old school, knows what he is doing and has a passion for all things creative that makes him commit himself to every project he takes until it is finished to perfection. He is a jack of all trades but what he really excels at is producing amazing imagery.

John Johnston: Again, a genuinely nice guy who has talents that go beyond photography. Just look at his work for New Belgium. He's amazingly talented and is also in it to win it until the job is done.

I strongly recommend all three of these guys. Some of my favorite people to have known and worked with in the last 5 years.

Big fan of Christina Kiffney. Great shots and a pleasure to work with.

Oh, I forgot

Carmel Zucker

Anyone Else worked with Cassie Kotnik. She is a great food photographer that deserves to be on this list. No set needed. Just set her loose on your restaurant with your best chef and watch the magic.

+1 For Joe Hancock

Jeff Nass. No ego, solid work. www.jeffnass.com

My company has used Jerry Goff for product shots.

Jesseyel Gonzalez at CPB is as good as they come. No ego, nice person, hell of an eye.

Great guy, extremely talented, a pleasure to work with.

Bryce Boyer for sure. Great guy, great to work with and will work his f-ing #$% off to get the shot.

Steve Ramsey isn't up here but should be on this list. Excellent location shooter. Knows how to scout, and get the best shot possible out of that location.

I forgot one;

Brooks Freehill. He's a lighting stud. He can light anything anywhere and will do some crazy sh1t to get the shot... and for fun after the shoot.

Scott Quinn @ scottquinnphoto.com

He can direct both stills and motion. Very down to earth with a lot of experience behind him.

Jessica Grenier Photography...Amazing, fun, professional, experienced...photography that rocks!

Jessica Grenier.

She is an absolute genius with a camera and lighting. Incredible eye and attention for detail. Fun, yet professional; very driven and motivated. Visit her site and see for yourself. You won't be sorry.

Jessica Grenier is an absolutely amazing!

There are an abundance of amazing photographers emerging in Colorado, but I'd have to say my favs that have been around for a bit are Kim Cook, Dennis Lane and Brian Bailey. I don't think Dennis is a member yet, but I know he's working on a new site so check it out soon.

scott quinn. gorgeous work, stellar guy.

I have been using C Lee Photography for 4 years. She has an amazing talent for capturing the moment. I use her for all of our events at the Country Club I work at. She has never disappointed me.

"Anyone Else worked with Cassie Kotnik."

Yep, she photo interned here and was great. Excellent food shots as mentioned but just as good all around.

And other folks I've worked with that have always delivered:

Anthony Camera
Bryce Boyer
Mark Manger
John Johnston
Tony Gallagher
Jim Narcy

Also a guy who just moved back to town Eric Magnussen

I mentioned Cassie Kotnik in an earlier post, and I also saw a person or two mention C Lee Photography. Just thought I should mention that they are one and the same. Check out her work at www.cleephotography.com

I concur with several folks on here that C Lee Photography is a good/safe bet. Check her out at: http://www.cleephotography.com

DANNY HOLLAND

Cassie Kotnik (CLee photography) is an amazing photographer. Her skill set is very well rounded. Amazing photos of food, nature, and wiggley toddlers!

Justin Edmonds knows his stuff.

http://jcedmonds.com

Bryce Boyer has a profound knowledge of his craft, has an extremely creative eye, and is just kick ass to work with. Definitely worthy of being on the list.

Jessica Grenier

She easily understands the style and compositions I need for our advertising and supplemental images, and beautifully captures the mood of the moment. She also is willing to put herself in somewhat precarious positions to get the shot (she -safely- hung off a 400 cliff for us once in order to photograph a BASE jump)! She's passionate about what she does, I can trust her to get the shot I'm looking for even when I'm off-site, and she is a pleasure to continue to work with!

also agree David Mejias.
