I Don’t Give A Flying F**k, Tiger.

Well, once again the whole world stops turning for something completely pointless. I know this has little to do with advertising, but this has to be said. This is not news. Tiger Woods, a millionaire golfer, got his bell-end wet with a bunch of women. He had multiple affairs. And so what?

Personally, I don’t even like golf. The idea of a sport that you spend around six minutes actually playing, and three hours walking around, well that’s not much of a sport to me. But that’s just my opinion, I’m in a tiny minority.

I just don’t get why everyone is so fucking obsessed with this. Why were people glued to the TV this morning to watch an over-rehearsed, flatly-delivered speech that could have been written by any publicist with a few dozen brain cells? Why will we now be subjected to sound bites from this speech for weeks to come? And why will so many millions of people give a shit?

I’m aware that this is a celebrity train wreck, and boy, people love a good wreck. Not me. I happen to be one of those people who doesn’t rubberneck when there’s an accident, but again, I’m in the minority. It seems people lead such sad and pointless lives that they need to fill their time with drama from other people. I’ve seen people almost stop their car to look at an ambulance parked at the side of the road. “Oh, what’s going on there, let me see, is there blood on the road, did someone die, is this going to be on the news?”

Two words.

Don’t.

Care.

And when some guy who hits a small dented ball puts his dick into people he shouldn’t, I don’t care either. I certainly don’t care about some apology that is only out there to try and help him ease gently back into golf. He’s the best golfer in the world, he doesn’t need to apologize to any of us. His wife and family, sure, but that’s his business. Haiti was news. 9/11 was news. Katrina was news. This is not news, it’s a distraction from your own lives. And if you had better things to do, it wouldn’t be such a distraction.

So, do you care about this Tiger Woods BS?
You do?
WTF?

Yet you spent the time to write about it. What's worse is I sorta read it.

You know what? I really dont care that you dont care.

pointless post. i hope this isn't an indication of what the new egotist will include. keep it to advertising. this isn't a rant site about anything you guys damn well please. i mean, it could be, but then viewership would either dwindle or just get increasingly dumber.

i read the first two sentences and immediately regretted it.

the only good news is that it's the weekend.

Oh no, you've gone and hurt my feelings now. What will I do? BTW, my column is still a rant and it seems like a legit subject to rant about to me, especially as it took over the airwaves today, and Tiger is one of the most endorsed celebs in history. If you don't like it, don't read it. Title says it all. And if I'm not mistaken, this is still a free blog, so shut your yaps.

Felix,

I generally agree with you, but the posts I like most are the ones in which you incorporate advertising and your experience in the industry. In that regard, I think you missed an opportunity to address how this relates to our industry and the risks brands take when they sign up athletes and celebrities to endorse their products. If this was Charles Barkley (who never tried to cultivate the family man image) and not Tiger (who did), this wouldn't be such a story because Barkley's brand image wouldn't have deviated so far from his actions.

The cynical Felix I enjoy reading would have pointed out that he doesn't give a fuck about what tiger did and nor will his sponsors and fans once he starts playing and winning tournaments again. We'll all forget and forgive and he'll be back to where he was before this all broke.

Ohmygod. Balloon Boy was, like, SO much better.

I agree with the National Car Rental VP - keep it at least somewhere within the orbit of advertising. Isn't that why people visit the site? Besides, blowing hot air over yet another hot air non-news story is nothing more than, well, hot air. For someone who doesn't care so much about something, you sure sure do seem to be caring about it. Figure out why(I'm sure you're not alone) and write about that. To so many people, especially the advertisers, Tiger Woods is nothing more than a brand. Write about that. We've dehumanized so much in our society, and celebrities are the type of brands in our consumer culture that rise and fall as swiftly as swiftly as the Dow Jones. Write about the Longmont man who is facing federal charging of product tampering with the "UNFAITHFUL" Gatorade labels. How that might have really affected the brand, or the market's perception of the brand would make for an interesting subject. It was recently estimated that if Tiger doesn't come back to golf this year that over $192 million in ad revenue will be lost, yet Nike is ready to stand behind their cash cow and wait until the milk isn't so sour. Are people really buying Nike just because athletes like Tiger serve time as billboards for the logo, or is it just because they make dope gear that people like to use? Imagine how consumers might perceive Nike's brand if all the celeb-athlete endorsements came to a halt and they started sponsoring more endearing and sustainable endeavors such as youth sports programs or shoes for Haitians or something REALLY worthwhile? Believe me, our up-and-coming generation of American consumers would most certainly take notice of companies with the will to shift the paradigm. In other words, a FLYING FUCK that's actually worth something.

You guys are all sounding like clients; "write about this" write about that" - this is Felix's forum, read it or not but I don't think you need to dictate what he writes.

Maybe so. But what usually sets Felix apart from every other asshole is his relating the topic back to advertising. If I want to read a rant I'll pay a visit to craigslist.

I have to go with the Anonymous post at 12:12pm. And frankly, I kind of enjoyed the rant.

Actually, we did care because if Tiger saw his shadow, there would be six more weeks of winter.

It wasn't my favorite post. Felix has had better. But what I hated way more than the post were the helpful essays on how Felix can do a better job writing posts. It did seem very client like.

Gee, given the fact that the Egotist mission is to "help Denver suck less" you'd think the contributors and visitors alike might have some sort of interest in elevating the conversations, or at least keeping them from looking like nothing good is going on here in our fine city. When I visit the site I'm hoping to gain a little insight as to what's going on in Denver's advertising and marketing community....does anyone else care about this?

And sure, a blog is a blog is a blog...bla bla bla...."it's hit blog, let him write what he wants" attitude. This post lowered the bar when so many good angles(especially advertising-related ones) could have been cultivated on the very subject he ranted on.

As visitors to this site and this blog, we are clients.

Thumbs down.

People, you make a good collective point, and I am not one to ignore solid criticism. I will do a follow-up post that goes beyond being just pissed off, to look a little deeper into the fallout of a fallen idol. In the meantime, I did just write a piece that has tempers flaring. And if it garners decent debate, that's good in my book.

Who Tiger sleeps with is his business. At the end of the day, he's a golfer. Isn't it time he gets back to golfing? The apology didn't bring his wife back. It was a PR stunt to help save his sponsors.

Don't forget, Tiger's apology and life is only important to us, because we live in a society that says God is dead but Elvis is alive. We celebrate the mediocre and gossip about fame and fortune instead of the accomplishments of the genius.

I'm glad you don't care about Tiger... I don't care either.

so agree. Who the hell cares?

Felix, I think the problem people had with your post is that saying "I don't care about Tiger" is possibly the most pedestrian thing anyone could say on the subject. It also pigeonholes you into the "I hate that sports people get jillions of dollars to get their photos taken and put on a brand's commercials" camp - which, by default, we know you don't belong to, based on your association with this site.

Tiger is quite possibly the most powerful single entity ever born in regards to marketing and branding, so if you have anything to do with marketing or branding, you most certainly do care when his house of cards crumbles (along with Am Ex, and Gatorade, and Accenture, and Tag Heuer, and...)

I'm sure you get the message. If it's any consolation to you, I fucking hate it anytime Lindsey Lohan or Paris Hilton are mentioned in anything, ever.
