  • Kickstart This: Stout Bottle Opener – A Forever Project from Colorado

    / Comments (0)

Do you remember opening a Coke with your Grandpa's bottle opener? His beautiful hunting rifle? The old fishing pole of your dad's or the family silverware that's been passed down for generations? These “forever objects” are still memorable to designers Joe Starmer and Lance Atkins because they helped foster special moments with family and friends. Stout Bottle Opener is their continuation of that forgotten time when things were more permanent. A forever object, built to be a part of memories.

Stout is a joy to use. Stick a bottle in. Pull the bottle out. A crisp ‘pshht!’ reassures the world that your tasty, new beverage has arrived. Stout’s bottom "claw" is curved to the shape of the bottle...you can’t miss. Shove a beer in, and it automatically centers itself. An extremely strong magnet holds the bottle cap until you’re ready to pluck it off.

Stout is completely designed and built in the USA. Want to support this Colorado-made product. Yes, you do.

  • #SiteLaunch: Legwork – Creativity. Innovation. DIY Ethic.

    / Comments (9)

Denver's pace-setting creative engine, Legwork, is out with a new site for their studio — and it's filled with all the wonderful touches we've come to expect. Here's a little background on the thinking behind what you'll see.

"We approached this new site with a few things in mind. First, we needed to do a better job of communicating our capabilities. We have a somewhat unique skill set and the old site was pretty ambiguous. When you look at the filters, layout, etc., our goal was to make it easy to immediately understand what kind of projects we work on.

Our next requirement was that it had to be modern in terms of style / technology. We went through way too many iterations because of this. (It only took us three years!) We ended up returning to simplicity with a flat design, using some canvas masking techniques we have been experimenting with and setting up a responsive layout. If you roll through the breakpoints, you can see how the nav and content adapt to a layout that is desktop friendly, then tablet friendly, then phone friendly from biggest to smallest.

The final and most important requirement was that we had to make sure our brand essence wasn't lost. We have always been slightly irreverent about what we do. We're constantly trying to find the balance between fun and professional, leaning a bit more towards the latter. Hopefully that comes through. Stay tuned, we are already working on new stuff for future releases."

  • Denver Art Society Wonders if You Believe in the Power of Art

    / Comments (0)

More than 50,000 K-12 students in Colorado had no art classes this year. In an effort to raise awareness of this troubling reality, 64 Denver artists shuttered their exhibits from the public. Ordinarily, the Denver Art Society exhibits 500 works of art from 60 neighborhood artists to 50,000 people per month. Today, all exhibits are blacked out.

Instead of working on their own art, many artists have been volunteering to renovate a 100-year-old building in the heart of the Arts District on Santa Fe Dr. If successful, they will re-open the space as an educational springboard for local arts students in the community.

They're just $4,455 away from the $50,000 goal they're looking to meet to help fund the new building and programs. If you believe in the power of art, you can donate here.

  • Kickstart This: The Future of the Denver Film Society

    / Comments (1)

The Denver Film Society needs your help raising funds to acquire 4 new digital projectors — equipment that will allow them to program and offer a full array of screenings at the organization’s diverse venues including: Film on the Rocks, the Sie FilmCenter, and the Starz Denver Film Festival red-carpet premieres at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House.

“By the end of 2013, the film industry will only distribute new films in a digital format,” said Ryan Oestreich, director of the Sie FilmCenter. “Even classic Film on the Rocks fan-favorite titles like The Big Lebowski, Top Gun and The Goonies have been converted to digital. Without DCP projectors, we will not be able to show these older films and any new films produced by Hollywood.”

The full cost for the four projectors is $300,000. A silent campaign among DFS supporters has generated $70,000 in gifts to date. Through Kickstarter, the Film Society hopes to raise at least $150,000.
