• Help Denver Suck Less: Keep A Needy Family In Their Home For Christmas

    / Comments (3)

People have said that we don’t have a heart around here.

Well, horseshit. We just don’t give a crap about you when you produce lame advertising. But one of the founding principles of this blog was to help Denver suck less, and right now it couldn’t suck more for a local family.

To cut a long story short, the Spicer’s are in dire straits. Their little girl Avery was diagnosed with cancer and her mom had to quit her job to take care of her. She was living at the hospital for three months straight, and had no income for a year. We were initially told they had no health insurance, which was true. But, as we just found out, Medicaid did pick up most of the tab for the health bills. However, due to a turd of an economy, her husband lost his job, so however you look at it, their little girl’s cancer was the start of a massive downhill spiral that sent them into rocketing debt. Here’s what Melissa, Avery’s mom, had to say

“I am writing this to ask for your help – whether you are able to give financial support or spiritual support. We are desperate at this point. Even if it is only $5, it will add up together in the end. If you aren’t able to financially donate, even a prayer for our situation would be appreciated. God has answered so many of our prayers over the past year, and I know He will show us the way. I hate to lose this house. We worked so hard to get this house and used Kelvin’s inheritance from his mother to help achieve our dream home. I hate to lose her legacy to us, to her grandchildren. If it is meant to be, then it is meant to be, but I REFUSE to let go without a fight. I pray that you don’t take this request the wrong way. I hope I am not stepping out of line by asking for this, and like I said at the beginning, I feel so torn about asking in the first place. I figure you’ll help if you can, and pray if you can’t! Cancer really sucks.”

We’re not asking you to bail them out and buy the house. We’re not asking you to pay any medical bills. But if you can do something, anything, to help them give their family a decent Christmas, that would great. After this last year, they could certainly use something to smile about.

Advertising is a profession that goes hand-in-hand with money. We know you’re not all wealthy, shit this isn’t the 80s. But if you can spare $5 and maybe bring lunch from home tomorrow instead of eating at the local bar, then you’ll be doing some good.

Some of you may think this isn’t the time or place. Some may say that there are many needy people right now. Well yes, there are. But this is a family we heard about, and know about, and they deserve it.

If you want to make a donation, and can make a donation, here’s how to do it. Let’s help Denver suck less.

Here are a selection of portfolios we’ve been sent over the last six months or so from people with expertise in a number of areas.

    >> Souldesigngroup – Still a young ‘un narrowing the focus to web/graphics work. After choosing London and fashion as a path, life lead right back to Colorado and evolved into website design.

    >> Jeffrey Smith, Designer – Designer from the New York area, trying to relocate out to Colorado. Has experience in Web, Interactive and Multimedia, Art Direction, 2D and 3D animation, 3D visualization, and Print.

    >> Erin Rietz, Graphic Designer – Left the corporate rat-race in chilly Chicago to spend her formative years in a more eye-pleasing and laid back locale (ie. Boulder). Looking for full-time or freelance work.

    >>Schnitt Edit – A small, creative editing shop in Minneapolis looking to establish some working relationships outside of their market. They have a great space in Minneapolis’ Warehouse District and would love to host some new clients there. Working in Denver on a mobile rig, working remotely or any combination that makes sense for the agency is also easy to do for Schnitt.

    >> Mary Howard Design – Lives in Denver and works as a graphic designer and marketing manager. Looking for freelance work.

    >> Desmond LaVelle, Writer – Not local, but a great writer with a great book, nonetheless. Currently working at FCB in San Fran and launching a new campaign for Dockers that was written up in The NY Times.
